Andre Russell was promoted to number three, Shubman Gill opened the innings and together they combined to power Kolkata Knight Riders to 232/2 in their 20 overs. Mumbai Indians stuttered in the first nine overs, the asking rate climbing all the time, and then Hardik Pandya took over.

The all-rounder, who has been a revelation this season, hammered 9 sixes and 6 fours as he galloped away to 91 off 34 balls. Despite this carnage, KKR had enough in the tank to end their 6-match losing streak as Mumbai Indians went down for 34 runs.

With this win, KKR have just about kept their campaign afloat while Mumbai Indians have not yet made it to the playoffs.

Earlier in the day, Delhi Capitals beat Royal Challengers Bangalore to become the second team to qualify for the playoffs and all but ended RCB’s campaign this season.
