MI New York vs Washington Freedom Commentary

12:35 AM IST Coming up next - With this result, the San Francisco Unicorns are confirmed to finish in the top two. The battle for the remaining top-two spot is now between the Los Angeles Knight Riders and the Washington Freedom. Not too far from now, the Texas Super Kings take on the Knight Riders here in Dallas. The Super Kings are out of playoff contention but will be desperate to avoid finishing with the wooden spoon. The Knight Riders, meanwhile, can seal a top-two finish with a victory and the valuable cushion that comes with it. Los Angeles have won the toss and opted to bowl first. You can switch tabs and join us there. Cheers!
12:32 AM IST The skipper of Washington Freedom - Steve Smith says it is a nice way to head into the playoffs. While the team will keep an eye on the result of the other game, he acknowledges that their fate is now out of their hands. Smith adds that they would love to finish in the top two and earn the cushion that comes with it. He also praises the squad's collective effort, saying different players have stepped up at different stages of the tournament, and hopes they can carry this momentum into the playoffs.
12:32 AM IST PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Andries Gous takes home the award for his match-winning knock of 96 runs from 54 balls. Gous is pleased that they got over the line, though admits he is gutted to have missed out on a century. He feels the pitch became easier to bat on as the game progressed, much like it did during the first innings, and says he knew they could capitalise once the wind shifted in their favour. On his own form, Gous believes he has been batting well throughout the tournament and that it was only a matter of time before he converted one of his starts into a significant score.
12:27 AM IST Time for the presentation ceremony...
12:21 AM IST Reflecting on the defeat - The captain of MI New York, Nicholas Pooran feels they posted a competitive total on a challenging surface and refuses to place the blame on either the batting or bowling unit. He says the side made an excellent start with the ball in the Powerplay, but credits Rachin Ravindra and Andries Gous for turning the chase around. Pooran also points to a change in the wind direction that made execution more difficult and admits the bowlers did not quite have the right plans. On a personal note, Pooran is pleased to have returned to form with the bat. While disappointed with the defeat, he says the runs give him confidence heading into the playoffs.
12:19 AM IST Washington Freedom ace the chase - Needing a win to stay in the race for a top-two finish, Washington have done their part. The victory lifts them to second in the standings, pushing the Los Angeles Knight Riders down to third for now. However, with their net run rate still inferior to that of the Knight Riders, they will need Texas Super Kings to beat Los Angeles if they are to hold on to a top-two finish. For MI New York, it was a case of opportunities missed. They failed to make the most of a promising platform with the bat and, despite making an encouraging start with the ball, could not sustain the pressure. The defending champions will finish outside the top two and will have to take the longer route if they are to retain their title.
