Ravi Shastri’s appointment as the head coach of the Virat Kohli-led Indian Cricket Team ended days of speculation post a tumultuous phase which saw a captain-coach rift come out in the open.
After former coach Anil Kumble resigned, post India’s ICC Champions Trophy final loss to Pakistan, following an ‘untenable’ relationship with Kohli; the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) started the selection process for a new coach.
Top names like Virender Sehwag, Tom Moody, Richard Pybus, Lalchand Rajput applied for the post initially while the date for the application was extended later. It was during the second window that Shastri applied for the post.
Shastri, who was earlier the Team Director from 2014 to 2016, shares a good rapport with Kohli and was always the front-runner for the coach’s post.
However, the announcement of Shastri as the head coach was filled with much drama. After BCCI-appointed Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) interviewed the candidates on Monday, member of the panel Sourav Ganguly announced that the announcement will only be made after a discussion with Virat Kohli.
But on Tuesday evening several channels ‘broke’ the news that Shastri would be the new coach. But BCCI secretary Amith Chaudhary denied the development. However, later in the day a BCCI statement confirmed the news.
After the intense Bollywood-ish plot unfolded current and former Indian crickets took to social media to congratulate Shastri.

If Bangar & Sridhar continue in their respective roles, Shastri's role is similar to the one he had earlier...only the designation changes!— Aakash Chopra (@cricketaakash) July 11, 2017
Batting, especially overseas, will be tested and will need help...can't have a better man than Rahul Dravid for that role. Good move again 👍— Aakash Chopra (@cricketaakash) July 11, 2017
For Ravi Shastri, this is his third stint with the Indian cricket team. In 2007, Shastri was appointed as the manager for the tour to Bangladesh.
In 2014, Shastri was once again called upon to head the Indian cricket team in a time of crisis. India had lost the Test series against England 3-1 and there were questions on coach Duncan Fletcher’s ability.
The BCCI appointed Shastri as the director of the Indian cricket team and his second innings was a lot more fruitful. India won the ODI series against England, secured a Test series win in Sri Lanka for the first time in 22 years. India reached the semi-finals of the ICC World Cup in 2015 in Australia and New Zealand and the 2016 World T20 in India.
