Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has had an interesting take on the captains of the various franchises in IPL 2019. Manjrekar expressed that Rohit Sharma deserves 8/10 for his performance as captain in the recently concluded cash-rich league. He added that Rohit is a reliable and balanced captain.
“Rohit Sharma has been around for a long time. Very reliable, balanced captain. Doesn’t make too many major mistakes. Knows how to handle some of the big guns in the team. I just like the ways he conducts the business out there,” Manjrekar told ESPNCricinfo.
However, Manjrekar rated Delhi Capitals’ Shreyas Iyer a better captain than Royal Challengers Bangalore’s Virat Kohli in this particular season. Manjrekar gave 8/10 to Iyer, while Kohli got 6/10 out for his captaincy. Delhi reached the playoffs for the first time since 2012, while RCB finished last in the tournament.
Manjrekar was impressed with Kings XI Punjab’s Ravichandran Ashwin as captain. The former India player gave 7/10 for the KXIP skipper.
“There is always some thought going on in every move and every selection,” said Manjrekar.
While speaking about the other captains in IPL 2019, Manjrekar gave 9/10 to Chennai Super Kings’ MS Dhoni, while Rajasthan Royals’ Ajinkya Rahane and Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Kane Williamson received 5/10 and 7/10 respectively.
Earlier, former India opener Gautam Gambhir expressed that India skipper Virat Kohli cannot be compared to Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni when it comes to captaincy.
“I have always maintained that you cannot compare Virat Kohli to Rohit Sharma or MS Dhoni. They are four-time and three-time champions (in the IPL) and you haven’t won the IPL. So from the captaincy point of view, you can’t compare them. He (Rohit) is right up there at the top now and I think the whole country knows about it,” said Gambhir.
