Vijay Hazare Trophy: Virat Kohli won his second consecutive Player of the Match award as Delhi outplayed Gujarat to pick up a narrow 7-run win. Rohit Sharma's Mumbai too made it two wins from two matches, defeating Uttarakhand by 51 runs. With that, the Indian batting takes a break, but will return in a couple of weeks with the New Zealand ODIs beginning January 11. Rohit Sharma's Mumbai is just two wickets away from beating Uttarakhand and make it two wins from two wins matches. However, Virat Kohli and Delhi's party could be spoiled by Gujarat, who are on their way to close this game out in the final 10 overs. Kohli enjoyed another strong innings to close out 2025, with 77 runs for Delhi against Gujarat. Rishabh Pant helped out with 70, but Delhi never had enough on the board, and are staring down the barrel against Gujarat. Mumbai wrestle control of their own match, taking wickets at the right time with plenty of runs to work with after scoring 331.
Virat Kohli continues his sensational run of form in the 50-over format with a sixth consecutive 50+ score in List A cricket, this time showing a strong boundary-hitting ability to help Delhi motor through the powerplay. Not Rohit Sharma's day, though, as his aggressive mindset falls apart early with a golden duck for Mumbai.
It's only been two days since bowlers across the country were walloped all over in the opening round of the 2025/26 Vijay Hazare Trophy – a day which saw 22 centurions, three of the four fastest centuries by Indian batters in List A cricket, a double century, and a team scoring 574 in one innings.
In that environment, the story was still all about Rohit and Kohli. Still two of the best batters going around in the world in the 50-over format, the two Indian greats were both amongst the centurions, and were just short of flawless: Rohit scored 155 in Mumbai's walk-in-the-park chase vs Sikkim in Jaipur, while Virat Kohli returned after 15 years to work his way to 131 vs Andhra in a tricky chase in Bengaluru's CoE ground.
Small grounds, flat pitches, manageable chases, a gulf in quality, and sublime form even heading into their pair of matches in the VHT – Rohit and Virat made the best of a very good situation. But they were only playing two matches in this tournament as preparation for New Zealand, with Delhi facing Gujarat and Mumbai playing Uttarakhand.
