India captain Rohit Sharma registered his ninth Test hundred in the first match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in Nagpur. In a fantastic innings that had a lot of similarities with his 160-run knock against England last year in Chennai, Rohit held the Indian innings together and reached the three figures with a brilliant lofted shot over the covers off debutant Todd Murphy's bowling on Day 2. The brilliance of Rohit Sharma could be judged from that one shot only. It was a similar delivery that got India's debutant Suryakumar Yadav bowled. Unlike SKY, who went for a cover drive, Rohit used his feet, got to the pitch and just helped it over the top.
The big smile that Rohit had while showing his bat to the dressing room narrated the entire story. It was a statement from the Indian captain. This was Rohit's first Test century as the Indian captain, also his first against Australia. The 35-year-old also created history by becoming the first Indian captain to score a century in all three formats of the game. In the world, only Babar Azam, Tilakaratne Dilshan and Faf du Plessis have done it.

The value of Rohit's century was immense in the context of the game as India just lost the crucial wickets of Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav.

In the morning session, Rohit brought his favourite pull shot out of the closet during the Australian skipper's second spell when a delivery was dug in short.
In fact, the low bounce made it easier to defend as both Rohit and Ashwin, during their 42-run stand, often plonked their front foot to frustrate the bowlers.
However, the slowness of the track did affect the Australian bowlers as both off-spinners, Nathan Lyon (0/66 in 20 overs) and Todd Murphy (3/35 in 15 overs), had to bowl quicker in order to get some purchase from the track.
The slowness could be best gauged from the fact that Australia's second pacer Scott Boland (0/7 in 9 overs), who normally bowls upward of 135 clicks, asked wicket-keeper Alex Carey to keep up to him in order to prevent the batters from using their feet. Boland, though, bowled like a workhorse and kept the batters quiet at one end.
Against spinners, there was no problem in easily rocking onto the back foot and playing on both sides of the wicket.
