Pakistan's legendary former batter Younis Khan rated Rohit Sharma and Babar Azam on the basis of their captaincy ahead of India vs Pakistan Asia Cup clash.
Team India will begin its campaign in the men's 2022 Asia Cup against arch-rivals Pakistan on August 28. Both sides will renew their rivalry after a fairly one-sided game last year in the T20 World Cup, when Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan had forged an 152-run partnership to steer the side to a 10-wicket victory. Since then, India has had a change in captaincy with Rohit Sharma taking over the reins from Virat Kohli across all three formats.
Under Rohit's captaincy, India have enjoyed success at both, home and abroad; the side defeated New Zealand, West Indies, and Sri Lanka in India under Rohit, and then went on to defeat England and West Indies at their soil too. However, the game against Pakistan always brings with itself some amount of additional pressure. Ahead of the match, former Pakistan captain Younis Khan spoke in detail about the two captains and rated them as well.
The former Pakistan batter believes that Rohit holds an edge over Babar in terms of captaincy in the shortest format of the game.
“We all know how crucial Rohit and Babar are when it comes to scoring big runs for their teams and the importance they carry in terms of putting up performances of significance," Younis told Telegraph India.
“But, captaincy-wise, Rohit has an edge over Babar because he has had a longer period as a senior Team India member and played under good captains as well. So that experience bodes well for Rohit,” he said.
Babar was named the captain of the team across all three formats in December 2020; Rohit, meanwhile, had been leading Indian Premier League franchise Mumbai Indians since 2013 and has steered them to five titles so far. In addition, the Indian opener had led the national team in absence of Virat Kohli on numerous occasions during the latter's stint as first-team skipper.
