A woman was axed to death by her brothers in Haridwar district of Uttarakhand on Friday in a suspected case of honour killing.

The woman, Preeti had married Omprakash against her family’s wishes three years back and was staying with him in Dharampur village.

On Thursday, Preeti’s aunt called her to a relative’s house in Abidpur village of Khanpur block on the pretext of resolving the bitterness between her and her family.

After being given a warm welcome, she stayed at the house for the night. The next afternoon, Preeti’s brothers Kuldeep and Arun, residents of Shahpur village, came there and verbally abused her and physically manhandled her, accusing her of betraying her family’s faith and honour.

Later, they attacked her with an axe. Two other distant relatives Omkar and Rahul held Preeti when she was attacked and she died on the spot.

Initially, the brothers and other family members had planned to kill Preeti’s husband Omprakash too and had expected him to come with his wife, but some work in Laksar kept him away.

On seeing Preeti alone, her brothers phoned Omprakash to come to for the supposed reunion of the family, but he smelled trouble as he heard Preeti weeping in the background.

A wary Omprakash arrived with some villagers at the house, but not before his wife had been brutally killed by her brothers.

After the mayhem, all the four accused fled from the house before neighbours could reach there.

Police has arrested two women relatives who narrated the whole incident to police but pleaded they were not part of the brutal act.

As per Laksar circle officer, Chandan Singh Bisht, police teams have been formed to nab the accused and family members are being interrogated to know who all plotted the murder.

A few years back in Kehada village of Jhabreda, a Dalit girl was killed by her brothers for marrying a youth against the family’s wishes within 20 days of her marriage.
