The Uttarakhand Kranti Dal on Sunday asked the government to declare Gairsain as the permanent capital of the state and turned down a proposal to name it as summer capital.

Even 18 years after its formation, the hill state has an interim capital, while Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh formed at same time have their permanent capitals, Uttarakhand Kranti Dal central president Diwakar Bhatt told reporters here.

“Both the BJP and Congress are to be blamed for dilly dallying on the permanent capital issue,” he said.

“Constructing assembly building and transit legislator hostel in Bharadisain (Gairsain) and Raipur (Dehradun) itself exposes the double standard of these parties.

“As Shimla is the permanent capital of Himachal Pradesh, Gairsain should be the only capital of Uttarakhand,” said Bhatt, a former Devprayag legislator.

To press for its demand, the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal has decided to launch a drive from next month.

Bhatt said the drive would generate awareness and mobilise people about the need of having a single permanent capital in the hills and focus on issues leading to migration in the state.
