Govt schools instructed to hold remedial classes for 10th, 12th

According to a circular issued on Wednesday, the remedial classes will be held between May 15 and June 6.

The Directorate of Education (DoE) on Wednesday instructed all the government schools in the city to hold remedial classes for the students of classes 10 and 12 during the summer break. The move comes after the announcement of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class 10 results in which the Delhi government schools lagged behind private schools, DoE officials said.

According to a circular issued on Wednesday, the remedial classes will be held between May 15 and June 6. “Make students familiar with the CBSE exam pattern and also cover the syllabus of classes 10 and 12. Also, enhance the learning level of students declared failed or to appear in compartment exam in CBSE Class 10 exams this year [sic],” the DoE stated in the circular addressed to all the Heads of Schools (HoS).

“The remedial classes are mandatory for all students of classes 10 and 12, as well as failed and compartmental students of Class 10 for the academic year 2018-19 [sic],” it said. All government schools will break for the summer from May 11.

A senior DoE official said that these remedial classes were announced specifically to bring Class 10 results on a par with Class 12. “There has been a gap between the performances of Delhi government schools in classes 10 and 12 in the last few years. While government schools are as performing well as Delhi’s private schools in Class 12 every consecutive year, they are lagging behind in Class 10. The major reason is lack of practice. They do not take examinations seriously until Class 8 because of the no detention policy. Therefore, the results in government schools are not on a par with the private schools in Class 10. This year the DoE decided to familiarise students with the exam pattern right from the beginning,” the official said.

During the remedial classes, students will be given daily assignments for each subject. The DoE has also asked the HoS’ to take a no objection certificate from the parents of all the students participating in the remedial classes.
