A 21-year-old man was stabbed to death, allegedly by two brothers, after he refused to sell them a packet of beedi on credit in southwest Delhi’s Najafgarh on Wednesday afternoon.

The victim, Gaurav’s mother Prem runs a grocery shop at Lal Stadium slum clusters in Najafgarh. The suspects, both drug addicts, live in the same neighbourhood. The brothers, Kunal and Rahul, fled after the crime but were arrested in the evening. Police have not shared their last names. The brothers were drunk when they murdered their neighbour, police said.

The deceased, identified by his single name Gaurav, lived with his parents in a slum where her mother runs a grocery shop for their livelihood. Gaurav’s father Mehboob is ill and bedridden, said police.

Around 12.30 pm on Wednesqday, Prem was at her shop when Kunal and Rahul demanded a packet of beedi on credit, a police officer associated with the case said. The 55-year-old woman refused, and asked them to clear their previous bills first.

“The two men said they will not pay any money and asked her to hand over the packet. When she refused, they abused and threatened her,” the officer said, quoting Prem’s complaint.

Hearing the commotion, Gaurav came out of the house and told the two brothers that they would get the items only after they pay up. An altercation ensued and the two brothers overpowered Gaurav.

“While Kunal caught hold of Gaurav, Rahul took out a knife and stabbed him below his right chest. Gaurav collapsed and the duo fled. His mother and neighbours rushed him to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead,” the officer said.

A case of murder was registered at Najafgarh police station. “We found them in the evening. The knife was also recovered,” the officer said.
