The police’s special cell has foiled a plan to murder and rob a well-to-do elderly couple in central Delhi .
The elderly couple owns pharmaceutical firms and factories in Delhi and lives alone in a sprawling bungalow.
The two arrested suspects and their associates saw them as easy targets and planned to rob cash and jewellery worth Rs 1 crore from them, said PS Kushwah, deputy commissioner of police (special cell).
The robbery-cum-murder was to be executed in the early hours of Wednesday, but the Delhi Police’s special cell managed to nab the two suspects on Tuesday evening. Two pistols, which they allegedly intended to use in the killing, have been recovered from the arrested men.
The two men have been identified as Ombir Singh and Jagdish Kumar both 27 years of age. Singh was out on a week-long parole to attend to his hospitalised mother, but instead used the opportunity to plan the crime, said the DCP.
Police said they had planned the murder in Tihar Jail where Singh was lodged in connection with other cases of robbery and murder.
“Singh befriended some criminals in jail and told them about his plan of targeting a wealthy elderly couple. He had spotted the couple while working as a driver in the same neighbourhood,” said an investigator.
