Woman architect harassed, says got no help from Delhi Police

A woman architect has alleged she received no assistance from Delhi Police despite repeatedly calling them for about 45 minutes.

A woman architect has alleged she received no assistance from Delhi Police despite repeatedly calling them for about 45 minutes after she was allegedly harassed by a rickshaw puller outside the New Delhi Metro station.

The woman was trying to hail a rickshaw to Paharganj when a rickshaw puller misbehaved with her.

The woman, who took a train from Kashmere Gate to New Delhi Metro station on Thursday, was trying to hail a rickshaw to Paharganj.

“The rickshaw puller asked me for ₹200. I realised he was drunk and walked away. This person suddenly came rushing to me and started abusing,” the woman was quoted as saying by news channel News18.

She said she threw her water bottle at the rickshaw puller’s face and dragged him to a nearby police station in front of the New Delhi Metro station gate and found it was latched.

“I made him sit on the chair. People started gathering around me, telling me to go away and not waste my time,” she said.

She then dialled the Delhi Police helpline number and asked for assistance. “I was told that they are sending help in five minutes but I kept waiting for close to 45 minutes to no avail,” she said.

The woman, who posted about the incident on Twitter, said she beat up the rickshaw puller with a stick after the police failed to show up.

“I kept hitting him until he started to beg and his arms started to bleed, I didnt want to stop but sadly the human inside me coudln’t hurt anyone more than this. I threw the stick and walked away. And guess what the police never showed up! (sic)” she wrote.

Delhi Police responded to the woman’s tweet asking her for the details of the calls she made.

“Kindly share the Helpline No. on which you called with exact date and time for necessary action at our end,” @delhiPolice tweeted.

Twitter users criticised the police for not responding to the woman’s call for help and some even praised her for her “courage”.
