12 SUVs stolen from Gurgaon this year, two used in crimes

GURGAON: A stolen Fortuner allegedly used by criminals to attack BJP leader Brijpal Teotia in Ghaziabad on Thursday night isn’t the first one stolen from Gurgaon to be used in crimes elsewhere.
A white one stolen from Cyber Hub in Gurgaon on February 22 was reportedly used to loot a dumper carrying concrete from Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu on April 5. The accused allegedly intercepted the dumper, forced the driver into the Fortuner and drove the dumper towards Rajasthan-Haryana border. The men freed the driver at Loharu in Haryana and he noted the vehicle’s number, said police.
Over a dozen sports utility vehicles (SUVs) — including 10 Fortuners, were stolen from Gurgaon this year. These vehicles can accommodate 8-10 passengers are known for their powerful engines. They cost Rs 25 lakh-Rs 30 lakh. Three members of gang that steals automobiles, arrested last month by the Gurgaon Police, said they resold stolen Fortuners for Rs 4 lakh-Rs 6 lakh.
The incidents show why it is important to lodge a complaint for stolen properties, say police. “Filing a report of vehicle theft with the police is a must. Otherwise it can land the owner in trouble. The owner can be questioned if the vehicle is found involved in some crime, even after filing a theft report” said a senior Gurgaon Police officer.
The Fortuner used in Thursday’s attack was allegedly stolen at gunpoint from the owner’s driver in DLF Phase-1 on June 8. The DLF Phase-1 police station had not traced the vehicle when it was found abandoned in the Niwari jungle on Friday morning. Its registration plate had been replaced with a fake number from Uttarakhand.
A check of the chassis and engine numbers showed the police it was registered in Gurgaon to Hydrobaths Ramco Marketing Private Limited. Despite repeated attempts, the company was unavailable for a contact.
