Police recovered a total of seven stolen vehicles from the possession of the arrested accused. The two men, identified as Gurbax alias Rinku and Satwinder, are part of an inter-state auto-lifting gang that sold vehicles to their clients in other states, especially Uttar Pradesh, by forging papers, the police said

During the duo’s interrogation, police learnt that on June 29, they had first struck at Lajpat Nagar. In Lajpat Nagar they stole two cars — a Mahindra Bolero and a Mahindra Scorpio. Next they stole a Toyota Qualis from Defence Colony, before leaving for Rajouri Garden where they stole a Maruti Eeco car. The two along with their other associates then stole a Mahindra Scorpio in Gulabi Bagh and then a Tata 407 pick up truck in Punjabi Bagh. The distance between Lajpat Nagar to Punjabi Bagh is at least 20 kilometers.

Officers probing the case said they were looking into the duo’s involvement in other cases and interrogating them to arrest their associates. Police said they are also probing the gang’s modus operandi and how they managed to steal one car after the other.

Explaining the arrest, police said that on the night of July 1, they received information that Gurbax alias Rinku and Satwinder, were going to meet at Dwarka Sector 18 to steal an SUV.

Gurbax, the police said, has at least 18 cases of vehicle thefts registered against him.

Joint commissioner of police (crime) RS Yadav said that a police team laid a trap near the Sector 18 market and spotted the two men in different SUVs. “We arrested them and recovered a pistol and five live cartridges from them. We also found that the two cars they were driving were both stolen from Lajpat Nagar and Rajouri Garden,” said Yadav.
