NEW DELHI: A fortnight after Gurgaon suffered massive traffic jams due to waterlogging, the state government appointed on Friday a retired IPS officer as chief governance coordinator (CGC) to ensure all agencies work in tandem.

Former director general of police SN Vashisth was appointed for a period of one year and he would charge only Rs 1 per month as salary.

According to official sources, the CGC will directly report to chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar who was unhappy with the handling of traffic jam and waterlogging on July 28 and 29.

Lack of coordination among various agencies was considered to be the main reason for the mess. Khattar had then directed the authorities to work in tandem.

Vashisth, who joined as the chief secretary office in Chandigarh on Friday, retired last year from the post of DGP state vigilance bureau.

Municipal Corporation Gurgaon, Haryana Urban Development Authority, Town and Country Planning, police, and district administration are among the agencies responsible for governance in the city.

Coordination meetings of the agencies are often held but effects are not seen at the ground level, said a senior government official.
