NEW DELHI: Facing criticism for a hike in its annual fee, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University clarified on Wednesday that the increase is only 32% and will be applicable for new admissions from this session onwards.

The University issued a statement, saying that the revised fee structure will not be applicable to the students admitted prior to the current academic session.

“The fee has been increased from Rs 53,000 to Rs 70,000. The last revision of the fee structure for the students of University Schools of Studies was done in the academic session 2011-12. Even after current fee revision, it is still much lower than other state government’s technical universities of Delhi,” the varsity said in the statement.

A week ago, the university had said that the students enrolled from the current year will have to pay Rs 70,000 instead of Rs 40,000 as fee.

“Now the newly-admitted students will have to pay Rs 70,000 at the time of admission. Previously, it was Rs 40,000. Revised fee structures for affiliated institutes of the university are also available on the university websites www.ipu.ac.in and www.ipuadmissions.nic.in,” the university said on August 10.

There are eleven University Schools of Studies (USS) in which around 5,000 students are enrolled. An official said that old students will continue to pay the earlier fee structure.

The admission fee charged in the self-financing institutes affiliated with the university has also been revised, based on the recommendations of the Delhi Fee Regulatory Committee.

“There has been around 20-25% fee hike for private affiliated institutes with the university,” an official said. A notification by Directorate of Higher Education has also been issued in this regard to 74 institutes affiliated to the university.
