To aid the proposed renovation of the Inter State Bus Terminus (ISBT) at Kashmere Gate, at least 2,000 buses will be shifted from there to other terminals across the city. This was decided on Thursday at a meeting chaired by Delhi transport minister Arvinder Singh.

The meeting was attended by senior officials of the traffic police, transport department, Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System Ltd (DIMTS).

The depots where the buses can be shifted include Anand Vihar, Sarai Kale Khan, Ambedkar depot near Dilli Gate, Millennium Park depot at Nizamuddin, IP depot at Ring Road and Dwarka.

Initially, the transport department had proposed that the buses be shifted to the depots at Anand Vihar and Sarai Kale Khan by June 15.

But the traffic police objected to the idea at a meeting on Wednesday. Their contention was that it would further skew traffic flow on the Ring Road near Sarai Kale Khan. Every monsoon, waterlogging and resulting traffic snarls choke the DND flyway.

"Shifting all the buses to the two depots will further affect traffic," said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic).

Plus, the Sarai Kale Khan and Anand Vihar terminuses are already saturated, Garg said. He had suggested that instead, the buses be spread across terminuses in the city.

The proposal was accepted by the minister.

"Singh said a committee would be formed to check the feasibility of shifting buses to different locations," said an official from the transport ministry.

It will comprise representatives from the transport department, the traffic police, DTC and DIMTS. "After that, a schedule will be made to move the buses," he added.
