The traffic personnel have embarked on an almost week-long drive — starting December 24 till December 31 — to keep a check on the merrymakers who pose danger to their own lives and that of others by mixing driving and drinking or by driving dangerously.

In all, 69 persons were booked for drunken driving while 88 others were booked for dangerous driving. A total of 332 persons were prosecuted for various road violations during the drive on Friday night, the police said.

Traffic department personnel equipped with breath analysers/alco metres were deployed at strategic locations near pubs, malls, hotels and clubs, especially on Wednesday and Thursday night. The department has also

tied up with hospitals to conduct blood test for those with high alcohol levels.

“We are not against drinking. What we want is that people should be responsible and not drive the vehicle themselves after consuming alcohol. This will endanger their own life and also that of other road users,” said a senior traffic official.
