50% hike in pension for distressed women

Ahead of the assembly elections to be held next year, Delhi cabinet has decided to enhance monthly pension of all distressed women from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500.

Ahead of the assembly elections to be held next year, Delhi cabinet has decided to enhance monthly pension of all distressed women from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500.

This move will help widows, divorced, abandoned and separated women.

Not only this, an amount of Rs 30,000 will also be extended to all categories of applicants under the scheme of Financial Assistance for the Marriage of Daughters of Poor Widows and Orphan Girls. So far, Rs 25,000 was provided by the government under this scheme.

"Department of women and child development has been providing pension to 89,000 women in distress and now the number is likely to cross the figure of one lakh,” said a senior official.

Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit said the decision taken by the cabinet is extremely forward-looking.

The cabinet also decided to grant freehold and ownership rights to the occupants of 45 JJ resettlement colonies. Around seven lakh families will benefit from this move.
