A 60-year-old woman died after being mowed down by a speeding Mahindra tempo outside a five-star hotel at Chanakyapuri area in New Delhi district late on Friday night.

According to the police, the accident took place around 11.15pm and the deceased has been identified as Sarla Pruthi, a resident of Rohini in Delhi.
Pruthi had come to attend a wedding ceremony organised at the five-star hotel with her husband, Rohtas Kumar, and was crossing the road when the speeding tempo hit her, said a police officer.

“The couple had come to attend the wedding function in a hired private vehicle that was parked near the hotel. After attending the function, the couple was walking towards their vehicle. They were crossing the carriageway connecting Dhaula Kuan and 11 Murti Marg when Pruthi, who was walking behind her husband, was hit by the speeding vehicle,” said a police officer.

The impact of the hit, the officer said, was so powerful that Pruthi fell and her head hit the road. She was immediately rushed to AIIMS Trauma centre where doctors declared her dead on arrival.

The errant tempo driver fled after abandoning the vehicle some meters ahead of the accident spot, added the officer.

A case of hit-and-run was registered at the Chanakyapuri police station and efforts are on to nab the culprit.
