The roads were transferred to public works department (PWD) by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi earlier this year.

Dikshit said rural Delhi will have a network of smooth, strengthened and improved roads before the monsoon.

PWD minister Rajkumar Chauhan said that a large network of rural roads were in a very bad condition. After a number of MLAs from the rural parts complained about the condition, that Delhi government took action.

"Even the Delhi Transport Corporation had refused to ply its low-floor buses on these roads. There are 674 such roads totalling more than 800 kilometres. We have started repairing it for almost R500 crore," Chauhan said.

Dikshit said the PWD got the road quality assessed by experts from CRRI, Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, and Delhi Technical University before starting the repair work.
