Metro speaks: 74% willing to ditch car if public transport system improves

A Hindustan Times poll conducted among metro commuters on Friday showed 74% people were willing to give up their car if the public transport system improved.

The poll was conducted between 6.30am and 7pm at Gurgaon’s Huda City Centre metro station. 13,508 people were surveyed of which 9,931 said they would give up their car. The rest, 3,577, voted no.

The poll was part of Hindustan Times public engagement initiative, ‘Metro Speaks’, launched on Friday.

For the next 14 days, different questions that affect the quality of life of the people in the National Capital Region would be asked every day.

These questions will be based on issues such as transportation, civic amenities and education.

“A good transportation system will always be a better alternative to cars. You can see how cars have made a mess on the roads,” said Amit, a voter.

Another voter, however, had a different view. Richa said, “A metro is convenient but I still like to drive my car.”

How to vote

Yes/No opinion panels were installed at the Huda City metro station on Friday. Two censor-based gates — one with ‘yes’ and the other with ‘no’ — have been set up at the metro station.

If the users agree with the question of the day, they can walk through the ‘yes’ gate, if they disagree, they will have to walk through the ‘no’ gate. Commuters can cast their votes through the online poll via HT’s Twitter and Facebook accounts.

On Saturday, people will be asked if they think that the parking fee in Delhi is fair.
