“The body was recovered from a toilet on the Utkal Express when it halted at the station at 7pm. A passenger intimated us about the incident when he went to the restroom,” said Bhairon Singh Gurjar, additional deputy commissioner of police (railways).

According to the police, initial medical examination gave doctors reason to believe that the victim was born on the train, which was going to Haridwar from Puri.

“We rushed her body to the trauma centre at AIIMS where the doctors pronounced her dead on arrival. Doctors ascertained her to be ‘zero days’ old which means that she was born hours before she was abandoned,” said a senior police officer.

There were no apparent injury marks on the victim’s body. “She wasn’t even covered in a cloth or placed in a bag. The body was just strewn on the floor near the commode. We have registered a case under Section 317 of the IPC (exposure and abandonment of child under 12 years, by parent or person having care of it),” Gurjar added.
