Aarushi murder: NCW not to summon UP cops before completion of probe

The National Commission for Women on Friday said that it would not summon Uttar Pradesh Police officers before the completion of investigation in the Arushi murder case.

The UP police, which is investigating the twin murder of a teen Arushi Talwar and her domestic help Hemraj, had claimed that both of them were found in an "objectionable" manner in her bedroom on May 16.

Arushi's father, who is in police custody and is an accused in the case, opposed the alleged liaison between the two.

"The commission may summon the UP Police but not now for sure. Once the commission is ready with all the details and investigation then we will decide the course of action. We also want to give some time to police to complete their investigation," NCW member Nirmala Venketesh said while speaking to reporters after meeting Arushi's mother Nupur Talwar.

Union Minister for Women and Child Development Renuka Chowdhary terming UP police as "insensitive", objected to the language used by police officials while describing the sequence of events in the case.

On the contrary, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati had asked the Centre not to play politics in the case.

The NCW wants an action taken report against the police officials from the Uttar Pradesh government, she said. The NCW will meet Mayawati in this connection.

"We met Arushi's mother. She is in deep pain and shocked at the way her daughter's image is being portrayed all over. She has given us some more details but that cannot be revealed at this stage," Venketesh said.

"We are trying to put the pieces of the incident together and once that is complete it would be easy for the commission to decide the future course of action," she said.

The NCW will also look at the case details and statements recorded by the police.

"We will look at all the papers and talk to the witnesses before preparing our own report," she added.
