Students from more than 20 public and private schools were sensitised about the early warning signs of various mental diseases and disorders such as epilepsy, tumour, Parkinson's, etc., on Friday.

"Educating school children is the best way of spreading awareness on any topic. We simplified the subject to a large extent for kids to understand the content better," said a senior neurosurgeon at AIIMS.

The initiative is part of 'brain awareness week' that the hospital is observing as a measure to reach out to maximum number of people for spreading awareness about various brain-related diseases.

"Due to lack of awareness about these brain diseases, by the time most people reach a hospital, it's already late," said the doctor.

Incidentally, more than 50% of the affected people belong to the productive age between 18-45 years, and in most cases the patients are sole livelihood earners of their families.

"Brain awareness week is an international campaign that allows people interested in spreading public awareness and in knowing about progress made in the field of brain research, to share a platform," the doctor added.
