Another elderly dies after NGO's Narela shift

Emrati Devi, 80, passed away on Sunday due to heart failure, said Suresh Kumar, superintendent for five homes in the area. “She was receiving regular treatment from our medical team and the nearby hospital,” he said. NGO volunteers had rescued her from Nizamuddin Railway Station a month ago. On Wednesday, minutes after moving into the new location, another patient, Sher Khan had died.

Ravi Kalra, president and founder of the foundation acknowledged the government’s efforts. “They are trying their best to help us but our people need fresh air. Here, no one is allowed to go out or come inside. But our people are used to mobility and they are now becoming depressed,” he said.

He is also concerned about his 50 staffers who are unable to commute to Narela. “Most of them are women and they live in south Delhi. It is impossible for them to travel this distance,” said Kalra.

Calling the home a ‘jail’, Kalra said that the nearby homes comprise a drugs rehabilitation centre and a home for beggars, which is not an ideal place for his people.

“We are even ready to pay double rent for land. I am scared if we continue to live in this environment more elderly people may die,” he said.
