The four-page autopsy report accessed by a Jamia Milia Islamia University student Afroz Alam Sahil, under the Right To Information (RTI) Act, says the cause of Ameen's death was “shock and haemorrhage as a result of multiple injuries”.
While Sahil is trying to raise questions about the encounter on the basis of the report, the police claimed these injuries were caused after one of them, Ameen, fell on the floor while trying to flee the Batla House flat on September 19, 2008.
The encounter took place after the Delhi serial blasts on September 13 in which 21 people were killed and more than 50 injured.
Another report by the forensic and medical experts along with the post-mortem report has not been made public.
“Whenever a gunshot is fired and enters the body and a blood vessel is damaged, the body is ought to suffer shock, it cannot be explained in isolation. If the bullet hits any vital organs, there is inadequate blood supply and excessive loss of blood-this causes haemorrhage,” explained a forensic expert at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
“All the injuries were produced by firearm ammunition except injury number 7 which is produced by blunt force impact by object or surface,” said Sahil.
Ameen had 21 injuries and all were “antemortem in nature” — caused before death —says the report. The number of gunshot wounds was 16.
“When a police team raided the Batla House flat, there was incessant firing from inside. Ameen tried to run away after pushing the police team. The ante mortem injuries were caused when he fell on the floor while trying to flee,” said a senior police officer.
Sajid’s post-mortem report says the cause of death was “craniocerebral damage as a result of gunshot injuries to head”. He had 14 injuries on his body.
“Injury no. 1-12 are produced by firearm ammunition, while injury no. 13 and 14 are produced by blunt force impact on surface or by object,” said Sahil, quoting the report.
All the injuries were ante mortem, the report said.
Describing injury no. 13, the report says it was “4x2 cm abrasion, red in colour over back of chest in midline” and injury no. 14 was “laceration of size 3.5x2 cm horizontally over front of right leg in the middle”. Of 14 injuries on his body, 11 were gunshot wounds.
Police say during the encounter, Sajid was hiding in a room and opened fire on the police.
