Batla House: NHRC raps cops

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday pulled up Delhi Police for its argument that a judicial probe into the September 19 Batla House encounter will “demoralise” the force.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday pulled up Delhi Police for its argument that a judicial probe into the September 19 Batla House encounter will “demoralise” the force.

“The magisterial inquiry is to inquire if a police bullet which killed a suspect in the encounter was really intended for his leg? Why was the accused shot on head? Was it necessary to take his life... how can such an exercise demoralise the police force?” the rights body asked.

The NHRC counsel made these comments before a bench led by Chief Justice A.P. Shah which is hearing a PIL filed by an NGO demanding judicial probe into the encounter “to bring out the truth”.
