Most of the college hostels were renovated for last year’s Commonwealth Games, improving facilities.

A fresher at Miranda House will now pay Rs40,000 as hostel fee, Rs11,000 more than last session. The amount includes Rs5,000 as security deposit, which used to be Rs1,500.

“We added state-of-the-art facilities during the renovation, pushing up maintenance cost. We have no option but to hike the fee, but the facilities are worth it,” said Pratibha Jolly, principal, Miranda House.

St Stephen’s College is planning a twin hike — hostel and tuition fees. “The final figure will be decided after next week’s governing body meeting, but a hike is in the offing,” said principal Valson Thampu.

Ramjas College, Shri Ram College for Commerce and Kirori Mal College are thinking along the same lines. Hindu already raised the hostel fee for freshers by Rs4,000 in October after the Games.

Students had to move out in July last as most hostels, barring that of Stephen’s, were to be renovated for the Games. Many now offer mattresses, laundry services and bed linen.

“The University Grants Commission can give you funds to build a new hostel but not to maintain it. A hike is certainly on the cards,” said Rajendra Prasad, principal, Ramjas College.
