“The party had promised 30% reduction in electricity tariff. It got an opportunity do so, but yet finally failed to deliver on its promise, proving that it had made all promises to just hoodwink the people,” an AAP spokesperson said.

Former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal criticised the Delhi budget and said the BJP had taken a “U-turn” on almost all its election promises. “The BJP had promised 30 per cent reduction in tariff. It didn’t do it. Why this U-turn?” Kejriwal said in a tweet. Kejriwal also said the state budget does not have any measures to bring down rising prices.

“What happened to the claims by Delhi BJP leaders that a provision of Rs 700 crore will be made in the budget to bring down the power tariffs in Delhi? Did their own Central government not listen to them?” the spokesperson questioned.

He said the BJP was getting desperate. “That’s why it is trying to portray that the Central government has not levied any new tax. The fact is that it is a well-settled tradition that in any state under President’s rule, no new tax is levied in keeping with the spirit of Article 265 of the Constitution. Therefore, the BJP cannot claim credit for what it has not done,” he said.
