“The Maharashtra government is trying to brush the issue under the carpet. Not just Ashok Chavan, but other big names are involved,” said BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain. “The Maharashtra government has registered a police complaint that the documents have been stolen. No thief would benefit from them. These have been made to disappear.”

Reiterating that the BJP would continue to press for a JPC probe into corruption, Hussain also suggested that apart from being a vote for development by the NDA government, the Bihar poll result showed the people’s rejection of Congress.

“Rahul Gandhi’s strike rate is in minus. He toured 22 constituencies and the BJP got one of these. In the Lok Sabha polls, they had got a seat each in Sasaram and Kishanganj as Rahul had not gone there,” Hussain said.

Taking a dig at the decision of top Congress leaders to forego their daily allowance because Parliament is not in session, Hussain said: “Rather than taking action on scams worth lakh of crores, they are talking of sacrificing Rs 2,000. Congress leaders should listen to their conscience and raise their voice against corruption.”

Asked about the BJP’s failure to take action against Karnataka CM Yeddyurappa despite corruption charges against him, Hussain claimed these were charges trumped up by political opponents like JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswami.

Responding to Rahul comparing Narendra Modi to Chinese leader Mao Tse Tung, he said, “We expect such statements from Rahul Gandhi in his present state of mind.”
