Hitting a maximum of 41.6 degrees Celsius, Sunday was the hottest April 11 of the last decade, 10.6 degrees higher than the temperature on the same day last year.

“The heat is due to lack of rain in northern India,” said a Met official. At the day’s biggest event, the Indian Premier League match between the Delhi Daredevils and Kings XI Punjab, spectators wilted in the heat with one child fainting and a number of adults throwing up.

“I carry satchets of oral rehydrating solution and keep giving them to the girls,” said the coordinator of the cheerleaders at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground, where the match was held.
