Most of the injured, several of them residents of Uttar Pradesh, were understood to have got off a DTC bus, which had ferried them from Anand Vihar ISBT to Kashmere Gate.

"The incident occurred when the Blueline bus, route number 221, was descending the ISBT flyover. It crashed into several people who were waiting for a conveyance near the end of the carriageway at 5.40am," said IB Rani, deputy commissioner of police (north).

The injured were taken to two hospitals, the Sushruta Trauma Centre and the Bara Hindu Rao Hospital. The lone casualty, identified as Pyara Singh from Shahjahanabad, died before reaching the hospital.

Singh had de-boarded the bus with his wife Harjeet Kaur before the speeding bus crushed his skull, killing him instantly. The two had married about two months ago and were said to be headed to Sirsa.

"We had gotten off the bus and were waiting for another one to go home when the bus appeared out of nowhere and ran me and my sister over," said Gyano, who was injured in the accident with her younger sister, Asha.

The Blueline bus driver fled the spot immediately after he rammed into a Delhi Police van parked near the spot, as the local police attempted to ascertain the exact series of events and took the injured to nearby medical facilities.

DCP Rani said a case of causing death due to negligence was registered at the Kashmere Gate police station and efforts to nab the vehicle's absconding driver were underway.
