Kashyap, the son of a fisherman, is an expert swimmer. Without waiting for a second, the 13-year-old jumped into the canal. “I saw four boys shouting for help and, since I knew the canal well, I jumped in to save them. I managed to take out three of them from the canal, but couldn’t locate the fourth,” said Kashyap, who knows how to swim since the time he was five years old.

Kashyap, who was returning from Sarita Vihar after delivering food to his father, managed to save Deepak, Pankaj and Badal, though Premi couldn't be found. His body was fished out late on Monday. All of them are aged between 12 and 15 years.

The incident took place around 4.30pm and within 15 minutes, Kashyap had managed to rescue three boys. Kashyap’s father Bhola Nath is known for his swimming skills in the area, and the police take his help in cases of emergency. “I have saved at least 50 lives so far. During Chhath and Durga Pujas, the police always ask me to be present near the river,” said Bhola.

As the family lives near the canal, Bhola made his children (two sons and a daughter) learn how to swim at the age of five. “There was always a fear that they would fall in the canal, so learning how to swim was a must for them. At least in cases of emergency, they can save themselves. Now three lives have been saved because of this,” he added.

The police have also acknowledged Kashyap’s effort and have decided to reward the family. “The boy’s father is always available for us whenever we needed him. Our rescue team continued the operation and after 24 hours, a boy’s body was fished out from the canal,” a senior police officer said.
