BSP, BJP councillors bring House down over argument

An argument between municipal councillors of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the MCD House meeting on Monday ended in chaos, reports Vibha Sharma.

Throwing to the wind all the decorum and discipline expected from elected members in a House, the BJP and BSP councillors were seen exchanging blows, raining punches, kicks and tearing each other’s clothes. A few woman councillors, who jumped in the fray, were seen tugging each other’s hair and shoving their male counterparts out of the Meeting Hall.

The House resumed after half an hour break. The BSP councillors did not join the House meeting and instead lined up at the nearby Chandni Chowk police station to register an assault case against their BJP counterparts.

The argument started after BSP councillors expressed their displeasure with Mayor Arti Mehra for not giving them an opportunity to speak on matters discussed in the House. The BSP councillors accused Mehra of not giving them recognition as a party.

“Even the day, before when we came to meet you, we were made to wait for half an hour. We are not even invited to the party meeting in which the agenda for the House and Standing Committee meetings are discussed,” said the BSP councilors. Enraged at being sidelined, the BSP councillors, led by Sanjay Gupta, Satpal and Raju Rana, rushed to the well of the House and started shouting slogans disrupting the House proceedings.Things took an ugly turn when the BSP councillors started climbing on to the table where the municipal secretary’s staff takes down notes in short hand.
