Most main roads in the city went under knee-deep water, deep enough for many cars, two-wheelers and auto-rickshaws to just sputter to a stop bang in the middle, leading to mile-long traffic jams and chaos everywhere.

It took just an hour or so of rain in the afternoon to bring Delhi to a grinding halt. The spillover was felt till late in the evening, as office-goers returned home. The only saving grace: it was a Saturday, a relatively low-traffic day on Delhi's roads.

The rain turned many roads into swirling pools. The worst affected areas were Aurbindo Marg, Lodhi Road, Pusa Road, Ramakrishna Ashram Marg, Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital area, Maulana Azad Road, Mandir Marg, Paharganj, Wazirabad Pool, Yusuf Sarai, Anand Parvat, IIT, Panchkuia Road, said traffic officials.

The city’s traffic police chief, Ajay Chadha, had to himself visit Red Fort to assess the situation. The PM will be addressing the nation from there on Sunday.

Traffic Police have advised that Tilak Marg, Mathura Road, BSZ Marg, Subhash Marg, JL Nehru Marg and Ring Road between Nizamuddin Bridge and ISBT Bridge be avoided during the Independence Day function on Sunday.
