Campaigning for DUSU elections picks up pace

With the National Student’s Union Of India (NSUI) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) ready to contend for the four posts in the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU), the parties are now aiming to bring about radical administrative and infrastructure changes.

“A lot of outstation students fail to find hostel accommodation. Safety is also a big concern. We will be pitching for more hostels on campus,” said Rohit Chahal, state secretary, ABVP.

NSUI had bagged the top post of the president in the DUSU elections held in 2011. However, ABVP’s agenda of a ‘corruption free DU’, which seems well-timed with Team Anna’s protests last year, won them the remaining three positions of the vice president, secretary and joint secretary.

This year, however, the party has been rallying in North and South Campus to introduce more student-friendly changes. One of these also includes expediting the system of declaring exam results. “We are trying for a student-Metro card because majority of students commute by the Delhi Metro.

There is also a huge shortage of U-Special buses, especially for those who go to colleges that are off campus like Aditi Mahavidyalaya and Bhagini Nivedita. We have been in talks with different agencies to improve the transport service for them,” added Chahal.

NSUI too has cashed in on the fact that the application procedure this year had left several hundred students in a quandary.

“The application process was tedious this year. The form fee had been hiked by 100%. We will now push for free online admissions and ensure that the SC/ST admissions are decentralised. A lot of students came to us with complaints and irregularities in the admission process,” said Ajay Chhikara, DUSU’s president from NSUI.
