The Delhi government on Monday gave the green light for the varsity to set up a new academic facility, complete with a hostel block for both boys and girls and residential facilities for its teachers.

The state-of-the-art campus will come up in east Delhi and house the school of architecture and planning, the school of design and a resource centre.

Sources said chief minister Sheila Dikshit approved the plans on Monday. “The chief minister was happy with the plan when it was presented before her on Monday. She also gave it her approval,” said a Delhi government official.

“A detailed plan will be prepared by the government. It had been decided earlier that a campus will come up in east Delhi, but what it would include has been approved now. A 19-acre plot opposite Surajmal Vihar, Karkardooma, has been earmarked for this purpose,” the official added.

The cost of the project is being estimated at R208 crore.

According to the proposal, the two schools and the centre will come up on a plot measuring 41,000 square metres. An indoor sports and recreation hall is also part of the proposal.

Officials added that the chief minister was unhappy with the earlier plans. “The architects were asked to revise the drawings as the chief minister wanted an iconic building. The changes were made and she is happy with the new plans,” added the official.

The minister of higher education, AK Walia, said construction would start soon. “We want to start the construction of the building soon so that it can be commissioned at the earliest. We need more campuses to decongest the present campuses and ensure students have the right ambience to study,” he said.
