"Post-Indira Gandhi regime, the biggest weakness of the Congress party has been a lack of coordination between senior leaders and workers," the senior Congress leader told a television news channel in an interview.
Aiyar, however, rejected the charge that the Congress was directionless — a controversial remark reportedly made by law minister Salman Khurshid to the media. Khurshid later denied making any such statement.
Asked if the country and the Congress party were disenchanted with the Gandhi family's leadership, he said: "Congress is the Gandhi family and till the Gandhi family is there, the Congress will not be directionless."
Asked if voters in Uttar Pradesh had rejected Rahul Gandhi in favour of Samajwadi Party's Akhilesh Yadav, he said: "Rahul Gandhi, our Rajkumar, is not one who would fight a war in an easy state like Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh. He went to battle in Uttar Pradesh, where victory for Congress was critical."
