“The incident occurred when the constable was attempting to drive vegetable vendors away from below the Palam flyover around 11pm on Monday,” said Parmaditya, additional DCP (southwest).

Angry at being asked to wind-up and, consequently, losing out on last minute business, the group of incensed vegetable vendors confronted the lone constable after levelling allegations of drunken misbehaviour at him.

“The vendors, among whom there were some women, complained that the constable was drunk. They started swearing at him before mercilessly assaulting him and locking him up inside an adjacent room,” said a senior police officer. The police, however, are yet to register a case in the matter.

“The constable was rushed to a nearby hospital where medical examination confirmed that he was not drunk. It was a minor scuffle so no case has been registered. A departmental inquiry has been launched into the incident,” said additional DCP.

In incidents of deliberate aggression against policemen in the Capital, at least four officers were killed, as many as 20 injured, five police vehicles torched and 50 cases of rioting were registered in the year 2010.
