Though they are yet to ascertain the exact motive behind the murder of the 18-year-old, investigators are of the opinion that the accused, Subhash, took the decision as he was not able to face her and her family’s rejection.
Preliminary investigation into the murder case, registered at the Vasant Vihar police station, has revealed that Sakshi’s parents were against the marriage not only because Subhash was their distant relative but because they belonged to the same ‘gotra’. Subhash, the brother-in-law of Sakshi’s cousin, was also double her age.
“So far we have learnt that Subhash and Sakshi started liking each other after he started visiting her house five years ago when she was just 13. We have learnt through the victim’s neighbours and other family members that the two used to meet quite often whenever her parents were away at work,” said a senior investigating officer.
Subhash hails from a village near Loni in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad, police said.
Several police teams have been conducting raids to nab him after he left his house early in the morning without informing anyone of his plans.
“We are examining his phone call records to ascertain if the victim was still in touch with him. Though it would be too early to come to any conclusion, we suspect that the couple recently had an argument over marriage. We feel she refused to marry him and that angered him and led to the murder,” the officer added.
Police sources also said that there was a property dispute within the family and that they were probing into this angle too.
