May usually records temperatures upwards of 40 degrees Celsius, but the past 10 days of the month have stayed a few degrees below that mark.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said this would change in about two days. The maximum temperature had touched 44 degrees Celsius earlier this month.

“The effect of the rain and thunderstorm around Delhi, that had caused slight coolness here, have now worn off,” said the Duty Officer at Safdarjung unit of the IMD. “The hot winds from the desert in Rajasthan are blowing again.”

The maximum temperature could go up to 43 degrees Celsius by Sunday, forecasts said.

“This was too good to last. How could we have possibly escaped Delhi’s infamous heat in May,” said Sumona Chakraborti (26), who works for a travel agency at Connaught Place in Central Delhi.

The mercury has already started rising once again.

The maximum temperature on Thursday was 40.8 degrees Celsius, a degree more than what it was on Wednesday.

For many, this also means a return of power cuts. “There were hardly any power cuts in the past few days,” said Jyoti Sinha (43), a housewife in Safdarjung Enclave in South Delhi. “Now they might start pulling the plug again.
