The much hyped plan of Delhi traffic police to crack down on new cars plying on city roads without high-security plates has been postponed once again.

Taking an apparent softer stance on those who bought their cars after May 1 and are yet to get the high-security plates installed in their cars, the traffic police said such cars will not be prosecuted till October 15.

This decision was taken at a meeting of traffic police with officials of the transport department on Wednesday. The crackdown was initially scheduled to start on Monday. After that it was postponed to Wednesday.

“Now this is the last chance for the ones who are yet to get high-security plates installed. We will not spare the defaulters after that,” said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic).

The fear of being caught and prosecuted has prompted the owners of new cars to get high-security plates installed. Earlier, on an average, 500 to 600 cars used to get HSRP installed in their cars in a day. Following the announcement of the drive a week ago, the number has gone up to 3,000 to 4,000 a day, said Garg. “Of about 70,000 vehicles which were yet to get HSRPs, 20,000 have already got the new registration plates during last few days. Now the plate-makers have been asked to complete the backlog in another 12 days,” Garg said.

All the HSRP issuing counters opened at 13 zonal transport offices have been instructed to work seven days a week to clear the backlog by October 15.
