Credit card fraud accused arrested

With the help of this small machine, cheats copy the details of a credit or a debit card on its magnetic strip, clone them and then use it to purchase jewellery worth lakhs of rupees without the knowledge of the card holder.

These data readers cost anywhere between Rs 30,000-50,000. Recently, south district police arrested 25-year-old Kamal Chand, who allegedly cheated four customers of the Standard Chartered Bank using the data-reader. Police said they have received complaints from six other customers.

Police are now looking for Nitin Sharma, a key accused in the case.

Sharma has similar cases registered against him earlier. “We would soon crack down on culprits. More arrests are likely soon,” said the officer.

The incidents came to the notice of bank officials after customers raised objections about transactions worth lakhs of rupees from their account without their knowledge.

In the complaint, bank officials alleged that all the cards were used at Bharat Petroleum Company outlets in South Extension Part-I.
