CWC harps on coalition dharma

The message, discussed at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting on Friday, comes in the context of the roadblocks on issues ranging from nuclear deal, setu samudaram and economic reforms.
Sources said that while welcoming the nuclear deal, the meeting will also not shy away from referring to the Nandigram developments. But some members wanted the party to condemn the CPM, when the CWC discussed the composite draft political, economic and international resolution before seeking AICC’s approval for it.
Union Minister P.R. Dasmunsi and Ramesh Chennitala, who are from Left Front ruled West Bengal and Kerala respectively, disagreed with the draft that seeks to juxtapose the Naxalite threat in the country with the absence of the state government in Nandigram. Since the CPM has also been saying this, the duo demanded that the two issues be delinked.
While assessing their first experiment of running a coalition at the Centre, most of the 37 members who spoke on the resolution felt that it was not helping the party. To strike a balance, the draft resolution thanks the allies for supporting the Congress at the Centre while emphasising the need to strengthen the organisation, specially in non-Congress states.
On the nuclear deal, the only divergent voice came from Gurudas Kamat who wanted the estimates of energy benefits from it, revisited.
The AICC meeting, which would attack the BJP, would also assure minorities that the Congress is “not sold to the US”. Neither the PM nor Rahul Gandhi spoke at the CWC meeting which Sonia Gandhi presided over.
