In a freewheeling discussion with Hindustan Times editors and correspondents on Friday, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s (DMRC) managing director Elattuvalapil Sreedharan (77) said that for a city of over 17 million people, the existing metro network is just one-third of what it should be.

“The city needs over 400 km of Metro. By Commonwealth Games (October 2010) we will complete 190 km,” he said.

Another 120 km will be added in Metro’s Phase III expansion and an equal length in Phase IV. “By Phase IV, we expect to exceed 400 km,” he said.
