A high alert has been sounded in Delhi following intelligence input that six suspected militants of a banned Islamic group have sneaked into the city from neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, police said on Wednesday. The alert comes a day before the 15th anniversary of Babri Masjid demolition.

Suspected Harkat-ul-Jehad-e-Islami (HuJI) militants entered the city from northeast Delhi’s Seelampur border late Tuesday night, the police have been told. The input said the militants left for the city from Deoband in a white Ambassador bearing a fake registration number, said sources.

“Two of the militants are of fair complexion and aged between 25 and 28 years,” said a police officer. Delhi Police spokesman Rajan Bhagat said: “Security has been beefed up and we request citizens to be alert.” Courts, airports, railway stations and important government installations were being closely monitored.

The Intelligence Bureau input follows similar information a few days ago that warned of militants planning to target courts in Delhi.
