One killed, 3 injured after being hit by car driven by Class 12 student of DPS
A homeless man was killed and 2 others were critically injured in Delhi on Thursday after a speeding car that was being allegedly driven by a Class 12 student climbed onto a pavement where the 3 along with other homeless people were sleeping.
Jatin Narwal, deputy commissioner of police (North), said that the accident took place around 5.45am near the Nigam Bodh Ghat crematorium on the stretch leading towards ITO from Kashmere Gate.
“The teenager has told us that they were going to their school when he lost control of the car and it climbed onto the pavement, killing one homeless and leaving two others injured,” said Narwal.
Police said the driver, a student of Delhi Public School (DPS), Mathura Road, did not have a driving licence. He was with his two classmates when the accident occurred.
While the other 2 occupants of the car fled the accident scene, the driver was stuck in the car. He was caught by some locals. One of them called the police and was handed over to them.
The injured were taken to the Sushruta Trauma Centre where they are undergoing treatment.
“We are still in the process of ascertaining the identity of the three homeless. An FIR is being registered in connection with the accident at the Kashmere Gate police station,” said a senior police officer.
The identity of the driver has been withheld by the police as they are still in the process of finding out his age. They consider him a minor and at present treating him as an underage driver.
The teenager is in the custody of the Kashmere Gate police and is being interviewed. A medical examination will be conducted to find out whether he was driving under the influence of alcohol.
According to the police, the car belongs to a Model Town resident. They have learnt that the teenager was driving his friend’s father’s car.
“We are finding out if the car belongs to the father of any of the two students, who fled the accident, abandoning the driver in the car. They will be traced and questioned,” an officer said.
