In four days, the Delhi Police control room has received more than 500 calls from Trilokpuri. According to senior officials, as many as one-fourth of those calls turned out to be fake.

Hoax PCR calls ranged from vehicles being set on fire to murder on the streets. However, police officials claimed that the hoax calls were merely done to provoke other incidents. Social media and online communication applications also helped in spreading rumours, said a police official.

Acting swiftly in the matter, senior police officials said more than 10 people have already been detained in connection to spreading rumours and added that a FIR will soon be registered to ensure people did not file false complaints.

Communal violence initially broke out in Trilokpuri on Thursday evening. The police admit it is one in a series of similar incidents that they ‘keep getting complaints about’.

It was in Trilokpuri that over 300 Sikhs had been massacred during the 1984 riots. This is the first time since then that communal tension has been reported from the area.

Since it was first reported, rumours have been circulating about the reason behind the Trilokpuri riots.

Normalcy restored at Majnu Ka Tilla
On the other hand, the situation returned to normal in Majnu Ka Tilla area, with police personnel carrying out flag marches throughout the day. Police officials said that the situation in the area was completely under control and business went on as usual.

“The situation in the area is completely under control. The local shops opened in the morning and there was no violence. Further investigation into the matter is also on,” said Madhur Verma DCP (North).
